Introduction to Explanation Writing

We are learning about explanation writing and how to structure our ideas using the TIIC and SEE frameworks. An explanation text is a type of writing that tells us how or why something happens. It provides clear information, logical sequencing, and detailed examples to help the reader understand a process or concept.

Today, we explored what makes a good explanation and practised identifying key features in a model text. We worked on a highlighting task to find the Title, Introduction, Information, and Conclusion, as well as the Statement, Explanation, and Example in each paragraph.

Next, we’ll use this knowledge to write our own explanation texts!

Skimming & Scanning: Speed in the Animal Kingdom

This week, we used skimming and scanning to find key information in a nonfiction text about the world’s fastest animals. After reading, we completed follow-up slides to check our understanding by identifying important details, vocabulary, and key facts.

To show our learning, we created infographics about one of the animals from the text. These infographics included their top speed, habitat, and special adaptations that help them move fast.
